About the program

The professional education program was established in 2017 as a direct extension of Veyra's commercial services arm. The logic is simple: the Institute's researchers are among the best-equipped practitioners in their fields; making that expertise available to industry professionals through structured courses benefits both sides — practitioners gain current, research-grounded training, while the Institute maintains a close view of applied problems worth pursuing.

All courses are delivered on the Calder Mesa Campus, giving participants hands-on access to the same instruments and computational infrastructure used by Veyra's own research groups. Each course includes at least one full facility session — participants work with actual equipment, not simulations or demos.

Courses run once or twice per year; some have waiting lists. Hybrid delivery (remote lectures + on-site lab days) is available for selected courses where indicated. Group bookings of five or more participants from the same organisation receive a 15% discount. Certificates of completion are issued for all courses; continuing professional development (CPD) credits are documented on the certificate where applicable.

Contact training@veyra.example to enquire about bespoke on-site delivery or to discuss a course not listed here.

Course highlights

CDS 4 days 1,600 cr

Applied Machine Learning for Scientists

A four-day course for working scientists who need practical ML skills. Day one covers supervised methods — regression, classification, cross-validation. Day two focuses on unsupervised techniques and dimensionality reduction applied to spectroscopic and imaging datasets. Days three and four are devoted to a hands-on project using a real dataset provided by a participating Veyra group, culminating in a short presentation to instructors.

Instructors: Dr. Naila Ravelo (CDS) and a postdoctoral instructor from the Probabilistic Inference Lab.

MME 5 days 2,200 cr

Materials Characterization: Cryo-EM to XRD

The only multi-instrument characterization course of its kind outside a university setting. Participants rotate through the Advanced Microscopy Centre (cryo-TEM, confocal, AFM) and the Spectroscopy & Analytical Core (600 MHz NMR, HRMS, XRD) in groups of four, working on materials samples relevant to their own research. Sample submission ahead of the course is encouraged.

Instructors: Dr. Yael Brenner (MME) and Veyra facility managers.

QPS 3 days 1,400 cr

Integrated Photonics: Design to Test

A hands-on course for photonics engineers who want to move from simulation to tape-out-ready design. Day one covers waveguide physics and the design software toolkit used in the Integrated Photonics Lab. Day two is devoted to mask-layout best practices. Day three is a characterization session on the PH-12 Photonics Test Bench, with participants measuring loss and dispersion on pre-fabricated test structures.

Instructor: Dr. Sora Veld (QPS).

ECS 3 days 1,100 cr

Climate Data Analysis for Policy Practitioners

Bridging the gap between climate science output and policy-relevant communication. Participants work with ERA5 reanalysis data and regional projections from CMIP6, using Python toolkits taught by the Climate Informatics Group. The final day is a structured communication workshop: each participant produces a briefing note for a defined non-technical audience and receives written feedback from instructors.

Instructor: Prof. Aiko Romero (ECS) and Dr. Selma Underhill.
